The Annual A N Varma Memorial Lecture Series

IDF hosted the inaugural A N Varma Memorial Lecture in 2012 to commemorate the bureaucrat who is considered ‘one of the most important architects of the 1991 Economics Reforms’.  Since then, eminent personalities have spoken at this annual lecture — Princeton Professor Avinash Dixit, former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, UC Berkeley Professor Pranab Bardhan, former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan and, most recently, Tsinghua University Professor Kebin He.

The Annual Union Budget Seminar

Beginning in 2008, the Union Budget Seminar is a collaboration between five of India’s leading economic policy research institutes:
  • Centre for Policy Research (CPR)
  • Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER)
  • India Development Foundation (IDF)
  • National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER)
  • National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP)
These institutes come together to discuss and reflect over the budget and its implication for the Indian economy in March every year. Since it began each institute takes the lead rotationally in organising the seminar for a three-year period. IDF has organised the seminars for the last three years, from 2013-15. The discussion panel in this seminar constitutes the heads of all the partner institutes. Eminent journalist T N Ninan has moderated the seminar for the past three years.
